Context of Hebrews 12:5-13
A letter of encouragement to endure hardship and continue onward.
“Keep on keeping on.” For we know the end reward for us.
Chapter 11 is an account of the heroes of faith.
Beginning of chapter 12 exhort us to follow faith examples and keep our eyes on Jesus, who also endured hardships.
Hebrews 12:5-13 (N IV)
5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,
”My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”[a]
7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.
9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
12 Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. 13 ”Make level paths for your feet,”[b] so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.

5 lại đã quên lời khuyên anh em như khuyên con, rằng: Hỡi con, chớ dể ngươi sự sửa phạt của Chúa, Và khi Chúa trách, chớ ngã lòng;
6 Vì Chúa sửa phạt kẻ Ngài yêu, Hễ ai mà Ngài nhận làm con, thì cho roi cho vọt.
7 Ví bằng anh em chịu sửa phạt, ấy là Đức Chúa Trời đãi anh em như con, vì có người nào là con mà cha không sửa phạt?
8 nhưng nếu anh em được khỏi sự sửa phạt mà ai nấy cũng phải chịu, thì anh em là con ngoại tình, chớ không phải con thật.
9 Cha về phần xác sửa phạt, mà chúng ta còn kính sợ thay, huống chi Cha về phần hồn, chúng ta há chẳng càng nên vâng phục lắm để được sự sống sao?
10 Vả, cha về phần xác theo ý mình mà sửa phạt chúng ta tạm thời, nhưng Đức Chúa Trời vì ích cho chúng ta mà sửa phạt, để khiến chúng ta được dự phần trong sự thánh khiết Ngài.
11 Thật các sự sửa phạt lúc đầu coi như một cớ buồn bã, chớ không phải sự vui mừng; nhưng về sau sanh ra bông trái công bình và bình an cho những kẻ đã chịu luyện tập như vậy.
12 Vậy, hãy dở bàn tay yếu đuối của anh em lên, luôn cả đầu gối lỏng lẻo nữa.
13 Khá làm đường thẳng cho chơn anh em theo, hầu cho kẻ nào què khỏi lạc đường mà lại được chữa lành nữa.

Principles of Discipline for Christian Parents
- Parents discipline their children because they love them.
- Parents who do not discipline their children do not love them.
- Parents discipline their children so they can have respect, confidence, positive relationships, etc.
- Parents should not be discouraging to their children when they discipline them.
Nguyên Tắc Dạy Dổ Con Cái Cho Cha Mẹ Cơ Đốc Nhân
- Cha mẹ dạy dổ con bởi lòng yêu thương con.
- Nếu cha mẹ không dạy dổ con nghĩa là không thương con.

God Does Not Punish His Children

Reflecting on this stanza of Psalms 100 brings me comfort. It is comforting to know that I belong to God. He is my God. I have nothing to fear, nothing to be anxious about. He will take care of me. God is making a claim to us. Why do I worry? It is foolish to do so. How foolish can that be? And yet we do it constantly. We are told to just do what we are told to do. Just like children obeying parents. They just have to obey and their parents will take care of the bills and their well-being. They just have to learn the rules of living according to what their parents told them so they can remain safe and happy. We also need to obey the commands of God so we can be safe and secure and happy. His commands are good for us. Everything is already thought out for us. We don’t need to do much. Just obey. When in doubt, obey. When in times of difficulty and not knowing what to do, return to basic tenets of God’s commands and obey. When in disputes with coworkers, just obey God and love them. Why do we expect to not suffer while we are living out our Christian faith? We will suffer. When we suffer, obey.
Looking to the interests of others by giving them your ears

To be a good listener means you are conveying to the talker they are valuable to you, you are giving of your time and energy in hearing them out, in evaluating and analyzing what they said, in in identifying with their feelings. Listening does not mean you have to be judgmental; you don’t need to tell them the right and the wrong way to do things, unless appropriate. I think what the talker really want from you as a listener is to mostly identify with their emotions, their feelings, and the situation they are in. As a listener it is like being a detective. The listener must maintain eye contact to pick up clues from the speaker’s voice, their facial expressions, their silences, the words they use, and the extent of the detail they are revealing to you; and then respond appropriately.
As you become a good listener people will feel valued and affirmed. They will want to come share with you what is on their mind. Therefore, it is important to show the speaker you are listening by your body language and by affirming with their story by asking follow up questions, by repeating what they say or their feelings in your own words, or by telling them of your own story that has the same theme.
Am I listening to God’s voice?

It has occurred to me that I have not spent time at all listening to God’s voice. No wonder I have felt so far from God and out of place with regards to my service for him. It is not only a matter of the amount of time spent with God. It is more importantly, a matter of the attitude of my heart. Am I too proud and self-reliant to be attuned to what God has to say to me? What is my frame of mind to make me be resisting a lifestyle of rest in God? Which begs the question, what am I resting my life on nowadays? What is the foundation of my life? What is the one thing that I absolutely need? The world is shamelessly telling me that I need much more than a simple life of rest in God; I need money, I need a nice car, I need nice clothes, I need to be well respected in the eyes of people with regards to smarts, intelligence, or an education, I need to be successful career-wise or business-wise. When it comes down to it; What makes me happy? And to what end am I seeking these things the world is telling me to seek? How will these things serve me? Don’t get me wrong; there is nothing wrong with having all of those things; however, they are only icing on the cake compared to the absolutely foundational aspect of who we are; that is, we are created to have God in our lives. So then, why are we shutting him out? Do not be foolish to think God plays no role in your life. He created us to be found in him.
Know that the Lord is God.

You have to know who you are worshipping. What kind of a God he is. What is he like? Who is he? What are his powers? What can he do? What has he done? How is all of this relevant to me? What are the significance for me? How does all of this knowledge about him affect me?
What does it mean that he is God? How will I respond? What is the attitude of my heart?
To start off: God is the creator of the universe and everything in it. Everything we see and touch and even our own selves are the works of his hands. We are truly under his mercy. We are truly helpless. How can we even start to boast? How can we even start to be proud of anything, really? Come on! Get real! Can we truly say we are proud of our education degrees? Can we truly say we are proud of our kids? Can we truly say we are proud of our accomplishment in our career? Let’s face it. Nothing is within our grasp. We cannot control anything. Even the breathe we take are in God’s mercy. How then can we boast about ourselves?
It is he who made us, and we are his.
Obedience to rules and regulations free me!

How ironic it is! Rules and regulations do not restrict our freedom. If we follow and obey, we are protected. We no longer live in fear. We obey and we live care free! Why rebel? Why break the law? Why do things otherwise? Just do what you are supposed to do and you don’t have to live in fear and anxiety.
I have truly experienced this afresh now. It has always been head knowledge. I hear it from my pastor. But now God has allowed me to embrace it. Just live according to the laws and principles in life, the life God intends, and I will be on the path of the straight and narrow. No worries. No fears. How absolutely awesome this enlightenment is to me! I am absolutely blown away by this deep realization.
Praise Holy Spirit for revealing this to me!
Why do Vietnamese avoid eye contact?

I believe we avoid eye contact to show deference and respect to the other person. It is as if we do not look at a god but instead bow down to that god in deference and respect. It shows that we are ready to listen and to learn and to obey what the other person has to say to us. It shows humility. The Vietnamese people are very humble and always speak lowly and humbly about themselves. Perhaps, Western Christians can observe the Vietnamese people to better learn the Christian way to act humble.
